The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 EZ, a standard zoom lens for Micro 4/3 mirrorless cameras, claimed as the most compact ‘pancake’ zoom when launched in 2014, is equivalent to a 28-84mm zoom in 35mm format. The 8 elements in 7 groups lens, with three aspherical elements, one Super HR (High Refractive) index lens, and one ED (Extra-low Dispersion) element, collapses down to only 22.5mm thick when retracted, has a minimum focus distance of 0.2 meters, and weighs 93 grams. The collapsible design lens is extended and ready for use after the camera is powered up. Zooming, with a twist of the zoom ring, and manual focusing is 'fly-by-wire.'
The lens is credited with a good build quality, a perfect fit with its metal mount, and comes with a non-rotating front element. Images are more than adequate, and sharper when stopped down. The combination of the electronic zoom and MSC (Movie and Stills Compatible) autofocusing provides near-silent operation, while its small size fits the Olympus E-PM2 perfectly. The kit is a great companion for videos, travel, land and urbanscape photography, street shooting, as well as other genres.
The Olympus PEN E-PM2, a compact, mirrorless interchangeable lens Micro 4/3 digital camera, launched in 2012, updates the E-PM1 with an adaptation of the class-leader in image quality, the 16MP CMOS sensor from the OM-D E-M5, TruePic VI image processor, a suite of art filters, 460,000 pixels 3.0-inch touch-sensitive LCD screen, in-body image stabilization, and Raw image capture. Being truly compact, the E-PM2 does not have any external mode dial and relatively few physical controls, with a claim of having the smallest and lightest footprint of any Olympus ILC. The E-PM2 measures 110 x 64 x 34 mm, weighs 269 grams, and saves images on SD/SDHC/SDXC cards.
