The Minolta MD Rokkor-X 45mm 1:2 pancake, the hidden gem in Minolta's lens lineup, is a compact and lightweight lens with a reputation for versatility and optical performance, capable of sharp images with pleasing bokeh. The lens, with 6 elements in 5 groups and 5 aperture blades, is well built, though mainly out of plastic, and has a robust metal mount, and rubberized focus ring. The lens, first released in 1978, is particularly favored for travel and street photography, has a minimum focusing distance of 0.6 meters, weighs 127 grams, and takes 49mm filters.

On a 35mm full-frame camera (as in this case, the Minolta X-700) where the diagonal of the film frame is 43mm, the 45mm is almost the 'perfect normal' lens. It sees what the eye naturally sees, images that are natural and relatable without distortion or exaggeration of distances between subjects. The focal length is equally suitable for head-and-shoulders portraits, intricate details in lifestyle photography, and, with its wide aperture, low-light scenarios.

The Minolta X-700, the icon of Minolta's manual focus 35mm SLR film cameras, is recognized as one of the last manual-focus cameras produced by Minolta before the introduction of the auto-focus Minolta Maxxum 7000 system series. The state-of-the-art flagship body was developed from the frame of the XG-M, built with electronically controlled stepless shutter speeds, a full program autoexposure system, or 'MPS' (Minolta Program System), autoexposure lock, and interchangeable viewing screens. The X-700 has a shutter speed range of 1/1000 to 4 seconds and accepts film with an ISO speed range from 25 to 1600.
