Lumix G 14mm 1:2.5 Asph., A Retro Review

Lumix G 14mm 1:2.5 Asph., A Retro Review
A look back at the world's lightest Lumix G 14mm 1:2.5 Asph., a vintage wide-angle lens for Micro 4/3 digital cameras.

Had a nice leisurely Sunday morning walk recently, with the age-old Lumix G 14mm 1:2.5 Asph. mounted on an equally vintage Pen 'Mini' Olympus E-PM2, which was introduced in 2013. The E-PM2 was a follow-up of the E-PM1, one of the smallest mirrorless digital cameras on the market when it was launched in 2011 with a body weight of only 269 grams.

The update in 2013, saw the Olympus E-PM2 with new 460,000 dots 3.0-inch touchscreen LCD, two additional buttons, a small built-in grip on the front panel, and a 16MP CMOS sensor, the same as found on the E-PL5 and OM-D E-M5. The 16MP sensor, accoladed as a class leader in image quality, was coupled to a TruePic VI image processor. Body colors available were Black, Red, Silver, and White.

On the other hand, the Panasonic Lumix G 14mm 1:2.5 Asph., introduced in 2010, is one of the pancake lenses available for the Micro Four/Thirds mount, the others being the Panasonic Lumix G 20mm f/1.7 ASPH, and the Olympus M.Zuiko 17mm f/2.8. The lens features 6 elements in 5 groups (with 3 aspherical lenses), seven circular diaphragm blades, and a minimum focus distance of 0.18 meters.

The Lumix G is only 20.5 mm thick, weighs 55 grams, takes 46mm diameter filters, has a non-rotating front ring, and has only a manual focusing ring. Focusing and aperture controls are by wire from the camera. The lens covers an angle of view of 75 degrees, equivalent to a 28mm lens on a 35mm full-frame camera.

Square Cuts

A wide-angle 28mm lens, which can be occasionally found with a wide 1.8 maximum aperture, is one of the most popular focal lengths for city and landscape photography. The focal length is capable of capturing images without introducing obvious distortions.

A 28mm lens is also a good focal length for maintaining a balanced perspective between close subjects and the background. The lens is almost as versatile as a 35mm lens and is also often used for architectural photography and group portraiture.

The Lumix G 14mm 1:2,5 Asph. is also extremely fast. Mounted on the Olympus E-PM2, the lens took less than a second to transverse its range of focus. As there is little to move inside the lens when focusing, minor focal length changes are equally fast.

Giving the images the square cuts, or in the 1:1 image aspect ratio helps accentuate the balance and dynamic of the composition.

The feature of the walk was to document images of the Saloma Link, a 69 meters pedestrian bridge linking the vicinity of the Petronas Twin Towers, in Kuala Lumpur City Center, to the residential district of Kampung Bharu across the Klang River. The city-side access to the bridge is also accessible to bicyclists and terminates at a free-standing view platform on the other side of the river.
