A look back at the fast and sharp Lumix G 14mm 1:2.5 Asph., a 2010 vintage by Panasonic, a 28mm equivalent wide-angle prime on a 2x crop sensor.

The Lumix G 14mm 1:2.5 Asph., a wide-angle prime lens designed for the Micro 4/3 sensor introduced in 2010, is a lightweight and compact pancake measuring only 20.5 mm thick and weighs 55 grams. The lens features 6 elements in 5 groups (with 3 aspherical lenses), seven circular diaphragm blades, a minimum focus distance of 0.18 meters, a non-rotating front ring, and a 46mm filter thread. Focusing and aperture controls are by wire. The lens covers an angle of view of 75 degrees and is equivalent to a 28mm lens on a 35mm full-frame.
The 14mm 1:2,5 Asph. is the second ‘pancake’ lens Panasonic produced for its G-Micro series cameras. It is lighter than the earlier 20mm 1:1.7 lens. In addition to being listed as a stand-alone, the lens was also bundled as the kit lens for the Lumix DMC-GF3 launched in 2011.
Built mainly of black polycarbonate, the lens has a metal mount and an outer barrel with a 9 mm-wide ribbed focusing ring just aft of the front end of the lens. It has neither stop marks nor focusing distances, and the only feature on the lens barrel is a raised red index dot aligning mark for mounting.
The lens is fitted with a stepping motor with a screw unit in the motor shaft that moves the focus lens directly, without relay gears or cams. Autofocusing is fast, and quiet, and produces little or no interference in movie soundtracks.

The lens is well-suited for travel and landscape photography, snapshots, architecture, and discrete street photography. With its minimum focusing distance of 0.18 meters though, the lens is a bit of a reserve with non-cropped closeups.

With the lens mounted on the Olympus E-PM2, the camera and lens make for a very light, compact, and almost pocketable combo for photographers looking for a ‘walkaround’ lens capable of delivering high-quality images. The kit is easy to carry and lug around, comes with an easy point-and-shoot stance, and a fast 1:2.5 aperture lens that should do well for night shots or shooting in low-light conditions.
