The vintage Konica Z-up 28W, a compact 35mm autoexposure and autofocus film camera introduced in 1990, is notable for being one of the first point-and-shoot cameras to feature a wide-angle zoom lens. The camera is fitted with an 8 element in 7 groups 1:3.5~6.6 28-56 mm zoom lens, wide enough at the front for travelers and street shooters who prefer to shoot at the 28, 35, or 40mm focal lengths, or just as an every day use camera with the standard normal 50 to 56mm focal length at the back end.

Online reviews have also suggested that this Konica is not only one of the best optically but also has the fastest AF since its early introduction.

Technical specs for the Z-up 28W include a shutter speed range from 1/4s to 1/280s, with a 2s exposure option, accepts DX-coded film with ISO ratings from 25 to 3200, autofocuses with a macro mode capable of focusing between 0.50 and 0.75 meters, and an option for a SNAP mode with the focal length preset to 28mm, the focal distance to 2.75 meters, and the film advance set to two frames per second. This hyperfocal setting prioritizes higher shutter speed over depth of field.

The camera measures 60 x 70 x 135 mm (not really pocketable), has a standard quick load system similar to other cameras of that era, weighs around 400 grams, and uses 2 CR5x lithium batteries to power its operation, good enough for up to 7 rolls of 36 exposure film when used with the flash on Auto mode.

Aside from the shoulder strap, if it comes with the camera, nothing else is extraneous with the sculptured and almost spartan-looking plastic-bodied camera. The lens up front is protected by a built-in UV filter (no caps required) and extends a short 18mm fully extended. Zoom control is two-way, the lens extends out when the zoom button is pressed, and on reaching the maximum distance, recedes back into the lens housing with another press of the zoom button.

The camera's operational functionalities are centered within the cluster around the LCD panel on the top plate. On the right of the oval-shaped panel is the Power On/Off button. The two lower buttons are for Mode and Functions, while a recessed Rewind button is on the left of the panel. Batteries are loaded into the chamber accessed from the bottom of the camera.
