The Canon EF-S 24mm 1:2.8 STM is a lens within the limited range of three primes and nine zooms Canon EF-S lenses for Canon DSLR cameras with APS-C sensors. The very compact 'pancake' was introduced in 2014, with six elements in five groups and a high-precision aspherical element. It also has a seven-rounded blade diaphragm, fly-by-wire manual focusing, a minimum focusing distance of 0.16 meters, measures approximately 70 x 32 mm, weighs 125 grams, and takes 52mm filters.
The lens is almost a replica of the first Canon pancake-designed lens for EOS DSLR cameras, the Canon EF 40mm 1:2.8 STM lens. The lens is built primarily of engineering plastic and a metal mount and is also recognized for its quality build.
The depth of the lens barrel is very slim, leaving just enough space for the AM/FM switch. This is the only control mechanism available on the lens, aside from the ridged focus ring located on its front, which moves freely and without resistance when focusing manually. An added benefit for videographers is that the EF-S24mm f/2.8 STM operates on a quiet STM mechanism, which does not affect the audio qualities of the recording during focusing.
Unlike the EF lens mount, where the lens alignment marks (for mounting the lens onto the camera body) are red dots, the lens alignment marks for EF-S lenses are white rectangles. On the EF-S 24mm 1:2.8 STM, the rectangle is seen on the outside of the lens barrel below the AM/FM switch, and on Canon ASP-C digital SLR camera bodies, the corresponding mark is slightly off-center to the right of the red EF alignment mark on the lens mount housing plate. While EF-S camera bodies have both EF-S and EF alignment marks, EF camera bodies have only the EF mark.

As tested with the EOD 300D, EOS 400D, and EOS Kiss X3, the EF-S 24mm 1:2.8 STM is equivalent to a 40mm lens on a full-frame camera. While a 40mm (or equivalent) lens is not as wide as a 28 mm or 35 mm or as tight as a 50mm, it captures images close enough to what the eye sees naturally, with sharp renders and minimal distortion. The focal length is still within the standard of a 'normal lens,' a recommended choice for street photography, travel, landscapes, portraiture, or just for documenting family and friends.
The lens accentuates the handy and compact nature of the camera bodies, making the combo look more like a digital superzoom with its lens compressed. The camera lens combos are very portable, weighing around 700 grams each. They are easy to lug around and handy enough to slot into a shoulder bag, eliminating the need for an extra camera backpack.
