The Canon EF-S 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 IS, a standard zoom kit lens supplied with Canon APS-C DSLRs, is equivalent to a 28.2 to 88mm zoom in the full-frame format. The lens, the second iteration of the 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 series, was launched with the semi-professional EOS 40D in 2007, and the entry-level EOS 450D in 2008. The lens is Image Stabilized (IS), which Canon claims offers up to four f-stops of shutter speed advantage, and focuses down to 0.25 meters at all focal length settings.
The lens was also included as the standard zoom kit for the entry-level Canon EOS 500D in 2009 before being updated by the 18–55mm 1:3.5–5.6 IS II, bundled with the EOS 600D and 1100D in 2011.
The lens, including the EF-S mount, is primarily made from hard polycarbonate plastic. It is lightweight at 200 grams, measures 68.5 mm × 70 mm, has 11 elements in nine groups, six circular aperture blades, and takes 58mm filters. The IS (Image Stabilization) system that was implemented uses a combination of gyro sensors, a microprocessor, and special lens elements to detect and correct camera shake, with images that remain stationary on the camera sensor.
The lens design includes a precision aspherical element for aberration correction, particularly spherical aberrations, to ensure optimum image quality across all focal lengths. Externally, it is a double-barrel design with a fixed outer barrel and an inner barrel that extends approximately 20 mm out from the camera body when the lens is set to its maximum 55mm focal length.
The lens is engraved with markings for the 18mm, 24mm, 35mm, and 55mm settings on a metal ring forward of the index mark for setting the focal length on the top of the lens mount section. The lens, Canon's first-generation IS, is designed to be primarily hand-held. When using a tripod, the image stabilizer had to be switched off manually.
For the later version of the lens, this action is no longer necessary it can detect when a tripod is being used, and 'IS' is switched off automatically. The lens is a good choice for general photography and will suit subjects as diverse as scenery and portraiture.
Externally, the lens is a double-barrel design with a fixed outer barrel and an inner barrel that extends approximately 20 mm out from the camera body when the lens is set to its maximum 55mm focal length. It is shortest between 28 and 35mm and protrudes roughly 10mm out when zoomed back to 18mm. Manual focusing is by a narrow ring attached to the front end of the inner barrel while zooming is a quarter turn of the outer barrel itself.
On the EOS Kiss X3 the lens was tested for the zoom walk, the focal range allows for the convenience of shots from the wide 28mm to moderate telephotos at 80mm without the need to change or switch lenses. The robust built EF-S 18–55mm lens 1:3.5–5.6 IS combines well with the Kiss X3 for a compact and lightweight digital SLR system one can quickly learn to get used to. The lens is equally up to the task with macros and close-ups.
